The New Inn, Bideford - also known for a short while as The Old Coaching Inn - achieved 66% of the vote to be acclaimed as Top Tour Hotel 1994-2008. Tantons and The Royal & Fortescue in Barnstaple split the rest of the poll.
Although we pay homage to the New Inn each year by passing nearby en-route to The Joiners, it hasn't been open for business for a number of years and this summer saw the builders move in on a residential project. At least it has fared better than the Collingwood Hotel, now condemned, and the Cliff Hydro in Ilfracombe, burnt to a cinder in an arson attack!
Apparently there is no truth in the rumour that a ghostly apparition still walks the corridors of what was the New Inn proclaiming: "I say, Noursey, one has had an accident of the worse possible kind!"...
